Poole Harbour is situated in Dorset in Southern England. It is said to be the second largest natural harbour in the world after Sydney. Famously known for its 3 miles of blue flag sandy beaches it has been a working port for many hundreds of years. The port use has declined in more recent years as the shallow water cannot take any container ships. The harbour is a drowned valley that was formed at the end of the last ice age. It is also the estuary of several rivers, the largest being the river Frome. It is a busy commercial port serving cross channel ferries such as Brittany ferries and Condor ferries.

Poole is linked by the A31 to the M27, and from there to the M3 to London. The A350 runs north to Bristol and the A35 to Dorchester and Exeter. Once in town, drivers are advised to head into the town centre and then follow signs for the port.
